Lane Field Hotel Project

onion

It is time to recognize the Port of San Diego Commissioners for their continued efforts to wall off another portion of the North Embarcadero from the heart of the downtown districts.

The proposed hotels will block visual access to the waterfront and take up one of few remaining areas that could address our open space needs in the downtown area. This venture by Port District effectively discounts the needs of the downtown residents and employs poor urban planning principles in developing our waterfront.

Lane Field

The project description is inaccurate. The Developer is Lane Field San Diego Developers, LLC. The Owner contact name is Jerry Trammer (Project Executive). The Project Architects are Davis + Davis Architects and JWDA. The uploaded illustrations are outdated and inaccurate. Lane Field is part of the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan. The primary design principles of the NEVP include: preserving/enhancing the view corridors, strengthening connections from the downtown core to the waterfront (vehicular, pedestrian and experiential), and transforming the waterfront into a public park and promenade. The NEVP MEIR dictates all of the design criteria for development on Lane Field, including building envelope, height, FAR, set-backs, and step-backs. Lane Field’s design includes very slender hotel towers oriented east/west specifically to avoid any obstruction of the view corridors and to enhance adjacent views of the waterfront. 35% of the site is dedicated to open space, including Broadway Plaza and the C Street streetscape. Lane Field’s “Public Access Plan” sets a new standard for design that welcomes the public into the project at the ground level and provides access to spectacular elevated viewing areas within the project, from which the locals and visitors alike can enjoy magnificent views of San Diego Bay from approximately 50 feet above Harbor Drive. The NEVP is a stellar example of how urban planning and design principles can enhance the public’s experience of the waterfront at a variety of scales.
