San Dieguito Park Accessible Ball Field

orchid

This new, fully accessible ball field was designed for use by the Miracle League, National Wheelchair Softball Association, and other users with special needs. This is the first ball field of its kind in San Diego County.

The design includes features such as wheelchair friendly, fall-cushioning rubberized surfacing, barrier free design, family restrooms for privacy, concession, storage oversize team dugouts, shade structures, picnic areas, and easy access to parking. The project is located on top of a large recycled water reservoir that serves San Dieguito Park, requiring special structural engineering to protect the existing reservoir structure. Phase 1 of the park is complete and the rubber surfaced ball field is in operation with an electronic scoreboard, and loudspeaker system to follow the action.

This special use ball field was cooperatively funded by Miracle League of San Diego and the County of San Diego. Funding is currently being raised for construction of phase 2 which will include parking, plazas, concession, comfort station and concession building as shown in the master plan. The ball field provides accessible recreation activities previously unavailable in the San Diego region. It allows children and adults of different abilities to play softball safely and in a beautiful setting. It is a welcome addition to one of the County’s premier recreational parks.

While a nice project, I'd like to understand how is this urban design.
