Avalon Fashion Valley

onion
This monstrosity towers over Friars Road. The scale is painful, 7-8 stories of "luxury" apartments carved out of the hillside. Its downtown density that is out of scale with the "neighborhood" (I admit to using that term loosely), and that exists as a brilliant example of a developer's ability to squeeze every square inch of usage out of a space, good design be damned.

Comments:

Mission Valley is a lost cause

Yep. Bad. But at least it's in Mission Valley instead of Mid-City. Mission Valley is a lost cause. Environmental devastation. Bad planning. No walkability. No neighborhood/community. Not one school in 7 square miles. Gridlock. Horrible construction quality. Noise. Out of all of San Diego, it truly qualifies for the tag, "There is no "there" there." Maybe all new construction should be in Mission Valley since the area is already a lost cause.

Friars Walk or whatever!

We are so happy to see the negative comments about this project. Whomever planned (and whomever allowed) it should be sent out of the country. Who will want to live right on the sidewalk, listen to traffic noise and wait in line to get in or out. The traffic on Friars Road keeps me penned inside my condo a good deal of the time. Instead of going toward Ralph's, Long's, dry cleaners, sandwich shops, etc., going east, I am working out a plan to shop either on Sports Arena or Garnet (and that ain't easy!). San Diego appears to have been built on the theory you let developers do whatever they want to, good or bad. Have you seen all the high rise apartment/condo building being built in Hillcrest? Sad, sad.

"Fashion walk?" No desire to walk next to this thing!

This project is an absolute scab and an eyesore on the hillside. The project bulk, height and scale so close to Friars Rd is too massive. The enormous retaining walls are unfriendly and out of scale with the slower traffic that will undoubtedly be caused by the entry/exit into the garages. Phew! Definite onion!

Really Bad

SD-PD Arch. This is truly a blight on the landscape and deserves an immediate facade redesign; not to mention it is overscaled and contributes significantly to traffic in the most congested part of SD.
