About the San Diego Architectural Foundation

SDAF logoThe San Diego Architectural Foundation (SDAF) is dedicated to education and the promotion of outstanding architecture, planning and urban design throughout the San Diego region. We seek to inspire excellence in our built environment through our educational, often social, and always entertaining programs.

As our mission indicates, the SDAF is committed to raising awareness – about architecture and all aspects of San Diego’s built environment, including the way we design, build, plan, preserve, sustain and grow – and the people that make it all happen.

We are all affected, be it positively or negatively, by the environment in which we live. Our homes, workplaces, schools and the communities in which they exist profoundly shape our mental and spiritual well-being. Our power to create, to produce, to utilize our physical and cognitive skills, and even our susceptibility to stress and mental illness are demonstrably influenced by our physical environment.

It is easy to assume that the quality of our buildings and our urban design is beyond our control or in someone else’s hands. But the reality is that we all play a role in shaping our built environment, either by demanding excellence or by settling for mediocrity. We must be aware, appreciative and involved in the design and the quality of our environment in order to ensure that the ongoing transformation of our city and our region preserves a heritage worthy of future generations.

Through our programming we strive to educate, and to engage all San Diegans in the dialogue about our environs and the significance it has on our daily lives, our futures and our legacies. Continued effort will mean an even better understanding of the relationship between our natural and built environments.

We are poised at a place of hope and uncertainty, experience and opportunity. San Diego will pull through and recover from the current economic adversity, and ultimately improve by taking this time to amalgamate, partake in the dialogue, and move forward thoughtfully and collaboratively.

We urge you to take part in this shared process.
