A pair of nondescript warehouses have been completely transformed into one of the best spots to enjoy sweeping views of the bay. Dubbed Bikeway Village, this re-purposed site along the Bayshore Bikeway in Imperial Beach offers strollers, cyclists, bird watchers and nature lovers a new venue to enjoy the jewel of San Diego – our Big Bay. The architects made a few simple but significant moves to add pop and value to the buildings: they added big openings on the bay side and street side, new awnings, new paint scheme and covered porches.
The landscape architects were the real heros here, creating a “floating” wood event deck (modeled on a pier) and two undulating terraces – all with unobstructed views of the bay, the Coronado bridge and the downtown skyline. New native landscaping has been generously added all around the site, adding color, scent and texture. Rumors has it that a brew-pub will soon occupy the western building. Should that happen, this will be an amazing spot to enjoy a cold beer. Two thumbs up to the developer who did just enough and not too much, and transformed an eyesore into a gem.
