Located in the culturally diverse community of Stockton, San Diego, CA, the King Chavez Primary Arts and Athletics Academy project improved and expanded the King Chaves campus as well as the joint-use-field through San Diego Unified School District and the City of San Diego. The 5.5-acre modernization removed portable classrooms and implemented a new two-story classroom building expansion, expansion of the existing staff parking, a usable open space courtyard, community garden, and playground/recreation area. The joint use field was transitioned from a ballfield with backstop to a regulation youth-sized synthetic turf soccer field to better align with the needs of the local community.

The modernization of King-Chaves Primary Arts and Athletic Academy transform a dated elementary campus into a vibrant outdoor experience where students are encouraged to explore, learn, and play. Vibrant colors and a variety of forms invite students to engage with their surroundings in a variety of ways. A large play structure designed to accommodate two age groups encourages interaction and bonding between students of all ages. Educational gardens allow children a hands-on opportunity to interact with nature. Additionally, a youth-sized soccer field and basketball courts provide opportunities for structured and unstructured play. The range of amenities throughout the campus have transformed the schoolyard into a vibrant recreational beacon within the underserved Stockton community.
