The Ted and Jean Scripps Marine Conversation and Technology Facility at Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO) breathes new life into the last standing structure of four that comprised the original Fisheries Science Center.
The 40,410-square-foot renovation honors the original design while contemporizing the modernist structure. The project includes eight new state-of-the-art research labs and indoor/outdoor classroom spaces.
The lower parking area which once held some of the best views in La Jolla, was expanded and covered with what now holds the best views – an open-air, instructional gathering space, rooftop café, and two large, stepped terraces, available for functions and accommodating special events.
The organization of space celebrates the building’s history and embodies the sense of ocean, earth, and atmospheric science research and education for which SIO is celebrated.
